Darwin Turf Club

Fannie Bay, NT

Our Customer

Nestled in the lush, tropical surrounds of Fannie Bay, the Darwin Turf Club hosts the annual Carlton Mid Darwin Cup, the pinnacle of an eight day dry season racing carnival that attracts over 20,000 people.

Project Description

Opened in 1955, Darwin Turf Club is a top class venue for events including the Darwin Cup. The Darwin Cup has become the biggest sporting event in the Northern Territory generating millions of dollars for the local community. It is a must visit for interstate and overseas punters and the horse racing community.

The Club grounds consists of the Ted Baily Grandstand, the Wood Lounge, Schweppes Pavilion, the Betting Ring, function rooms, bars and an executive marquee.

Programmed were contracted to provide a full exterior repaint to the grandstand, betting area, members grandstand, Brett Dixon House (named after the chairman of the board), and the bar area.

Project Solution

The four buildings were painted in six weeks. A bold colour scheme transformed the area, which was in need of much tender loving and care. Programmed identified and used specific products to meet the needs and requirements of the Club.

The local Programmed team needed to work around other trades setting up for the yearly carnival while ensuring that any equipment we used to access the areas to be painted did not damage the grassed areas. The team also worked around time restrictions imposed by track work and designated no-work days at race times.

Programmed provided the Club with two painting teams to carry out repaint works concurrently across the Club, rather than on an individual basis. It was an approach that maximised the use of access equipment throughout the painting process, and afforded us the ability to accommodate additional painting requirements the Club requested.

Project Outcome

Not only was Programmed able to complete works early as a result, but we were also able to undertake other extra work to help with a complete revamp of the Darwin Turf Club. Our ability to maximise productivity around the use of access equipment, deliver the outlined work ahead of schedule as well as assist the Club to complete more painting than they originally set out provided the Darwin Turf Club valuable cost and time efficiencies.

Due to the excellent results, the Club has signed a long-term maintenance programme with us. Programmed will be regularly visiting the Club to provide a building condition report and complete yearly painting maintenance services, ensuring that the Darwin Turf Club is continually maintained to a top condition while looking its best at the yearly carnival.
