Pioneering Telecommunications Facility Management

6 May 2024

In the dynamic realm of telecommunications, the quest for efficiency, safety, and innovation knows no bounds. Programmed Facility Management New Zealand stands at the forefront of this evolution, spearheading a digital revolution in telecommunication tower management through cutting-edge digital asset capture technology.

Critical telecommunications infrastructure forms the backbone of modern connectivity, linking individuals and businesses across the globe. Effective management and maintenance of these towers are essential to guarantee uninterrupted service.

Our mission is to streamline data production for condition assessment, asset validation, and verification. By seamlessly integrating this data into comprehensive maintenance schedules, we craft proactive strategies tailored to the unique needs of telecommunications networks.

For over 2.5 years, Programmed has been pioneering Facility Management, harnessing the power of asset digitisation within our workflow. Through the utilisation of drones and specialised ground capture technology, we have conducted in a new era of efficiency and safety.

Central to our approach is the utilisation of the Skydio drone fleet, equipped with advanced obstacle avoidance technology driven by artificial intelligence. These drones redefine traditional inspection methods, significantly reducing inspection time while upholding impeccable safety standards.

The process begins with the identification of a tower asset, followed by drone deployment on-site. The drone conducts a comprehensive inspection, autonomously navigating around the tower and capturing hundreds of images for the construction of a precise 3D model using photogrammetry. This model serves as a visual assessment tool for our experts, providing unparalleled insight into the tower’s structure.

With the data accessible remotely via a web platform, our customers can view highly detailed 3D models from anywhere in the world, streamlining decision-making processes and enhancing collaboration.

Since March ’22, Programmed Facility Management has conducted thousands of flights, boasting several hundred hours of flight time. This has resulted in a significant reduction in the end-to-end inspection process time compared to traditional methods, with issues identified at an impressive rate.

Looking ahead, the future holds even greater promise. Emerging technologies such as ‘drone in a box’ solutions and sensor integrations herald a future of increased autonomy and data richness, paving the way for even more efficient Facility Management practices.

The adoption of drone technology for digital asset capture has proven to be valuable for Programmed Facility Management and its customers. By embracing innovation and leveraging cutting-edge solutions, we have ushered in an era of safer, more efficient, and more data-driven telecommunications Facility Management, setting a new standard for the industry.
