At Programmed, we believe creating vibrant, green spaces is about more than just plants, it’s about people, partnerships and purpose. This planting season, one project stood out for the way it brought together memory, environment and community care.
Waikumete Natural Burial Area
In the quiet, green expanse of Waikumete Cemetery, something meaningful unfolded. Families came together not just to remember, but to restore, taking part in the annual planting day in the Natural Burial area.
On Saturday, 14 June, guided the council cemetery team and supported by Programmed team member Paul Bonner, families planted over 200 native plants in the prepared soil. Programmed supplied the plants and ensured the site was ready, while families took part in a hands on way to honour their loved ones and contribute to a space that will grow and evolve with time.
Species included:
Manuka, kanuka, nikau, kahikatea
Rengarenga lily, hebe, tarata, and more
This project is part of a long term vision to revegetate the burial area with native flora that reflects the ecology and quiet beauty of the Waitākere Ranges.
Planting days like this remind us that our work goes far beyond the visible landscape. They reflect care, dignity and the kind of partnership that brings lasting value to people and place.
We’re proud to stand alongside Auckland Council and local families in helping grow something that truly matters.
