September Gardening Tips

We are finally in Spring! The latter half of August was also quite spring-like at times, and I think the plants that were not already awake have certainly begun to wake up now.

September Gardening Tips:
  • Pest control for roses should be front of mind. Keep an eye out for caterpillars and aphids. These guys can quickly devour leaves and reduce plant vigour and value. There are many ways to deal with this issue from ‘do nothing’ to organic and chemical pest control sprays. I favour pyrethrum based products, but you will need to keep an eye on the roses as this is a contact spray and more may arrive. You can also apply fertiliser to assist with the formation of flowers and good strong root growth. I like the organic slow release pellets which are now available odour free.
  • Brighten up your gardens with a punnet or two of new spring flowering seedlings. We have had a long cold winter so celebrate with some fresh colour. Dig some manure or compost into the soil, plant them in, water well with a seaweed tonic, and stand back.
  • If you have some space, or want to try potted vegies, its time to plant these too with either seeds or seedlings. Perhaps, wait to plant tomatoes for a few more weeks unless you have a sheltered spot. Get some beans, peas, beetroot, and zucchinis going. Do the same thing with the soil as you did for flowering seedlings
  • Hold back on the pruning and watch the plants respond to what you did in the cooler months.
