Programmed Facility Management recently oversaw the delivery of two new pedestrian pathways within Auckland Domain, improving connections through one of the city’s most significant public spaces.
Situated on the Pukekawa volcano, Auckland Domain is the city’s oldest park and holds considerable historic and heritage significance. Reflecting the character of this special location was an important consideration throughout the project. Both pathways were constructed using the red McCullums chip historically associated with the Domain.
Work began in late February and was completed at the end of June, with the project delivered on time and within budget.
Stage one: The Crescent
The first stage involved constructing a new pedestrian footpath alongside The Crescent. The pathway provides pedestrians with a safer alternative to walking on the road and has received positive feedback from park users.
Construction had to be carefully coordinated around two major festivals held within Auckland Domain. The project team liaised closely with festival organisers to accommodate their requirements while maintaining progress and delivering the work to a high standard.
Stage two: Football Road to the upper car park
The second stage created a new pathway connecting Football Road with the upper car park behind Auckland Museum. This provides better pedestrian access between the museum area and the sports fields below.
Working around protected trees was a key challenge during this stage. The scope was adapted to protect established tree roots, incorporating root bridging and realigning sections of the pathway where required.
Sustainability was also considered throughout construction, with all excavated material generated by the project reused on site.
Naylor Contractors delivered the construction work, with Programmed Facility Management overseeing its implementation.
The completed pathways have improved safety and accessibility while respecting the heritage and natural environment of Auckland Domain. The successful delivery reflects strong planning, collaboration and responsive problem-solving by everyone involved.
