Forgotten World Highway: Maintaining Community Pride at the Matiere Exchange

2 June 2026

Tucked along the Forgotten World Highway, the small village of Matiere welcomes visitors from around New Zealand and across the world exploring the region through the popular Forgotten World Rail Trail experience.

As part of a recent audit at the Chorus 21067 Matiere MTW UAX exchange site, our team reviewed the condition of the building and surrounding grounds to ensure the site continues to meet the high standards expected by both Chorus and the local community.

Located directly opposite a picnic area regularly visited by rail trail groups, the exchange site forms part of the wider visitor experience in Matiere. Travellers often stop to eat, explore the village and learn more about the history of the local area. For many visitors, these shared public spaces contribute to their overall impression of the region.

That is why ongoing property maintenance matters.

Programmed Facility Management is proud to support Chorus by helping ensure the site remains clean, safe, tidy and well presented for both operational performance and community presentation. The original Kleenrite contractor and the current Programmed team have continued to deliver a consistently high standard of work at the site.

While maintenance work can often happen behind the scenes, its impact is highly visible. Well maintained facilities help create safer environments, protect valuable infrastructure assets, improve presentation standards and reduce the likelihood of larger maintenance issues developing over time. Regular upkeep also helps support positive experiences for customers, contractors, visitors and the wider community.

At Programmed, safety remains at the forefront of everything we do. Our Zero Harm commitment guides how we work across every site, ensuring our people, customers, communities and environments are protected through safe and responsible work practices.

This year also marks a significant milestone for Programmed as we celebrate 75 years of operations across New Zealand and Australia. From humble beginnings in 1951 with a single paint van, Programmed has grown into one of the region’s leading providers of operations and maintenance services, supporting thousands of customers and communities every year.

Our purpose remains the same: to build outstanding people, strong customers and great communities.

Projects like the Matiere exchange reflect the importance of reliable maintenance partnerships and the role quality facility services play in supporting infrastructure, local pride, tourism experiences and community wellbeing across New Zealand.
