Project Description
Scenic Hotel Group engaged Programmed to deliver a high quality maintenance and painting program for the Scenic Matavai Resort in Niue. With limited local trades expertise and no access to large scale hardware supply chains, the resort required a trusted, New Zealand based provider with the capability, scale and experience to carry out the work to a high standard.
Having partnered with Programmed previously, Scenic Hotel Group trusted our ability to not only deliver on quality but also to manage the complexities of working offshore. The goal was to refresh and maintain both the Scenic Matavai Resort and the nearby Scenic Matavai Apartments accommodation, ensuring consistency in presentation and longevity of finishes.
Project Solution
Over many years, Programmed has managed the complete repainting of the resort’s interior and exterior buildings. Each year, teams of 4-6 painters from across New Zealand are deployed to Niue for 6–7 week stints. All materials are sourced and shipped from Dunedin up to three months in advance, with no ability to replenish once on site due to local limitations.
With 13 buildings across the two locations, nearly half underwent a colour change mid program following consultation with Scenic Hotel Group’s Area and General Managers. This required close collaboration and agility from the Programmed team to adjust scope and scheduling without impacting timelines.
Extensive planning was critical. Programmed’s large national workforce allowed us to resource the job flexibly while maintaining our commitments back in New Zealand. Our consultant and Southern Regional Paint Manager, Tony Weir, made approximately five separate trips to Niue to oversee progress and ensure quality assurance throughout the project.
Project Outcome
The ongoing program has significantly improved the visual appeal of the Matavai properties, lifting the resort’s overall presentation to the high standards expected by international guests. Programmed continues to provide servicing, condition reports and preventative maintenance, ensuring the buildings remain in peak condition despite the harsh Pacific Island climate.
Through this long term maintenance model, Scenic Hotel Group is avoiding the high costs of reactive repair work. The consistency of service, coupled with our ability to manage remote logistics, has made Programmed a valued and reliable partner for their offshore property portfolio.
